Community Education

GLFD offers a variety of Community Education and Training Services (see below).  For additional information or to schedule any of these services please call (231) 334-3279

Home Safety Inspections

The trained professional firefighters of the GLFD are available for a fire safety inspection of your home.  A fire safety inspection can help to ensure that equipment is operating properly and can help identify potential fire hazards within your home.  We will survey your home and make recommendations to correct any potentially dangerous issues.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

A smoke and carbon monoxide detector can save your life!  Toxic gases cause 75% of fire related deaths in house fires.  All, including hard-wired, Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors have a life expectancy.  Replace your detectors as required (see back of detector for details on life expectancy).  All detectors should be tested monthly and battery-operated detectors should have the batteries replaced every 6 months.

If you need a smoke detector please call the station at (231) 334-3279

CPR Classes

Glen Lake Fire Department can provide a variety of American Heart Association CPR and First-Aid courses for individuals or groups.  Groups of up to 20 individuals can be accommodated.  GLFD typically trains over 200 people per year.

Fire Extinguisher Training

Did you know there are different types of fire extinguishers and different classes of fire?  It is important to use the right type of extinguisher on the specific class of fire to avoid personal injury or damage to property.  The wrong extinguisher could cause electrical shock, explosion, or cause the fire to spread.

Portable extinguishers are useful for putting out small fires; however, they are not effective against large, spreading fires. In these situations, dial 911 and exit the home.

P.A.S.S.

To properly use a fire extinguisher, follow the acronym:

PULL - Pull the pin on the extinguisher
AIM - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
SQUEEZE - Squeeze the trigger to release the product
SWEEP - Sweep the nozzle from side to side (slowly)

Classroom / School / Community Group Presentations

GLFD personnel are eager to train our community’s children on Fire Prevention and Fire Safety.  We are also available for presentations at your business, condo association or other community group.
